A Historic First for Taiwan: Having Fun In the Mountains Wins Top Prize at PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL in Munich
Letting the World See Taiwan — Children’s Programming Makes It Happen. For the first time in Taiwan’s history, Having Fun In the Mountains has won the top prize at PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL 2024.
Three children’s programs produced through the Fubon Cultural & Educational Foundation’s Children’s Program Talent Incubation Project — Whispers-The Match , Having Fun In the Mountains (co-produced with Hakka TV), and By The Sea (co-produced with Public Television Service) — were all shortlisted as finalists at PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL 2024 in Munich, Germany. Among them, Having Fun In the Mountains, co-produced with Hakka TV, claimed the Global First Prize in the “7–10 Non-Fiction” category. Director General Ice Leng of the Fubon Cultural & Educational Foundation expressed her excitement, stating: “This is the first time in Taiwan’s history that a top prize has been awarded at this globally benchmarked children’s festival. It is an enormous encouragement and recognition, and it proves that Taiwan’s children’s content has reached an international production standard.”
Having Fun In the Mountains received unanimous praise from international jurors and children’s content professionals, earning an outstanding score of 8.66. The jury commented: “Having Fun In the Mountains and Whispers-The Match truly allow us to see children, as well as the mutual trust between the children and the production teams.” PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL is the world’s longest-running children’s media festival and is regarded as the highest honor in children’s television. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, it is often referred to as the “Emmy Awards of children’s television.”
This year’s competition brought together children’s programs from 52 countries, produced by more than 255 organizations, with a total of 422 entries. The evaluation process consisted of three stages. In the first stage, the jury selected the shortlist prior to the festival. During the festival, over one hundred children’s media professionals from around the world participated on site, scoring each program on a scale of 0–10 across four criteria: suitability for the target age group, originality of program concept, narrative and scripting quality, and overall production execution. Based on the aggregated scores, three finalists were selected in each category, with the highest-scoring entry receiving the top prize.
“The rigorous evaluation process itself is a strong affirmation of our work. We are honored to be recognized and supported by children’s media professionals worldwide. In the 7–10 Non-Fiction category, Having Fun In the Mountains won first prize and Whispers- The Match received second prize; in the 11–15 Non-Fiction category, By The Sea also received second prize. We will continue to invest in talent development and content creation, and to build sustainable methodologies for Taiwan’s children’s content industry to expand its market presence and connect with the world,” said Ice Leng, expressing gratitude to partners and jurors.
In addition to the six main awards, the festival also presents four special prizes — UNESCO, UNICEF, Gender Equality, and Annual Theme Awards — as well as two special jury awards from the International Youth Jury and the German Children’s Jury. Director Kuo Hsin-Ying and producer Chen Pin-Chia of Having Fun In the Mountains shared: “We would like to thank the children who participated in the program for their trust in the team, and the Fubon Cultural & Educational Foundation’s incubation program for accompanying this project for more than three years as it grew and developed. Every mentor and advisor in the incubation program provided invaluable guidance and support.”
“While Fubon is bringing Taiwanese children’s content onto the international stage, we also hope to earn the love and support of audiences at home. This year’s incubation program has once again launched with great momentum, and we warmly invite talents who are passionate about children’s content to join us and work together to build successful models for children’s media,” said Ice Leng, extending an open invitation to creators across Taiwan.
